Eco Friendly Cookware

Monday, 23 August 2010 17:37 by Stacy

Selecting the right type of cookware is just as important as choosing healthy food.  The Environmental Working Group recommends choosing safer cookware to reduce the risk of inhaling toxic particles when cookware is heated.

Teflon is the common name for cookware coating called polyetrafluorethylene (PTFE).  PFOA is a synthetic chemical that is used in the manufacturing of traditional nonstick cookware coatings. Although PFOA isn’t present in the Teflon finish, it can be formed as a gas when the coating is subjected to high heat and begins to degrade. Some reports suggest that the heat doesn’t need to be that high for PFOA to be released.

I love to cook, and it is very important that I keep the integrity of the organic food that I harvest from my kitchen garden.  I'm stoked about the Cuisinart® GreenGourmet™ line. The riveted stainless handles stay cool on the stovetop and are manufactured using 70% recycled materials which is always welcomed when searching for green alternatives.  The line is nonstick yet petroleum free and made without PTFE and PFOA.  The cookware’s hard anodized construction provides high heat conductivity, which requires less energy to reach desired cooking temperatures.

So, even if that new recipe doesn't turn out, at least it's healthy!
